You've booked the movers. You've packed the kitchen. Now you're staring at a couch, a dining table, and a fridge you don't want in the new place — and the movers charge by the cubic metre. Here's how to turn that furniture into cash in under two weeks.

Start at least 3 weeks before moving day

Furniture takes longer to sell than phones or clothes. Give yourself runway. If you leave it to the last week, you'll either lose money or end up donating it.

Know what sells fast vs what sits

Sells in days:

  • Beds and mattresses (in good condition)
  • Fridges, washing machines, microwaves
  • Dining tables and chairs
  • TVs and TV stands

Takes weeks:

  • Leather couches (especially large ones)
  • Large wardrobes (hard to transport)
  • Older décor pieces

Price to move quickly, not for maximum value

Moving is a deadline. If you're choosing between "sell for R1,500" or "pay R800 extra to transport and still try to sell later," the first option wins every time. Price at 60–70% of what similar used items are listed for.

Photography that sells furniture

  • Tidy the room first — buyers judge the whole space
  • Shoot from the corner diagonally — shows scale and depth
  • Include measurements in the description (length × width × height)
  • Show any damage honestly

Buyer handles transport — state it clearly

Don't get roped into arranging delivery for a couch you don't want. In your ad, say: "Buyer arranges own collection. Happy to help load." Most buyers in South Africa expect to bring their own bakkie or hire one.

Bundle for bulk sales

Sometimes offering everything as a package (whole lounge suite, or full bedroom set) brings in a single buyer faster than selling piece by piece. Consider listing both: individual prices AND a bundled "take it all" price.

What to do with what doesn't sell

Mark it down 20% after one week. If it still doesn't move with 5 days to go, give it away for free — drop the price to R0 and say "first come, first collected." You'll find a taker within hours.

Still got stuff on moving day? Charity organisations like the Hospice and SA Guide Dogs often collect free. Call them the week before.

Post your furniture now — you've got 5 free ad posts to get started.
