Pricing second-hand clothes to sell fast on Tradeza

Why your R500 jacket isn't selling — and a simple formula that actually works for pre-loved fashion.

Second-hand clothes are the most over-priced category on any classifieds platform. Sellers anchor to what they paid. Buyers anchor to what they'd pay at Mr Price. Here's how to meet in the middle and actually sell.

The 25–40 rule

For most casual pre-loved clothing, the realistic sale price is 25–40% of the original retail. Not 70%. Not 50%. 25–40%. Even if the tags are still on.

  • Fast fashion (Mr Price, H&M, Cotton On): 15–25% of retail. These lose value fast.
  • Mid-tier (Country Road, Woolworths, Levi's): 30–40%.
  • Designer (Gucci, Burberry, Max Mara, authenticated): 50–70%, sometimes more.
  • Vintage & one-of-a-kind pieces: whatever the market bears — your photos and description do the work.

Photos are everything

No one buys clothes from a photo on the floor. Minimum setup:

  • Hang the item on a hanger against a plain wall.
  • Natural light — stand near a window in the morning.
  • Take one full-length shot, one close-up of the fabric, one of the label, and one of any flaws (yes, show the flaws).
  • Include a mirror selfie wearing the item if it fits you. Conversion doubles when buyers can see the fit.

Measurements beat sizes

Sizes lie. A "medium" from 2018 Country Road fits differently from a 2024 Woolworths medium. Post actual measurements:

  • Tops: chest (across, laid flat), length (shoulder to hem), sleeve length.
  • Bottoms: waist (across, laid flat), hip, inseam, rise.
  • Dresses: chest, waist, length.

Bundle to save on postage

If you're selling multiple items, offer a bundle discount ("Take both for R400"). Most fashion buyers are happy to pick up 3–4 items at once, and you halve your meet-up time.

Be honest about flaws

Pilling, a small stain, a missing button — write it in. It builds trust and cuts down on returns or disputes. Photograph the flaw. Price a little lower to compensate.

Where to meet

For clothing, meet at a mall. Bring a changing-room-friendly backup spot so buyers can try on. Returns are rare when buyers try before paying.

Final tip: relist every 2 weeks. Tradeza prioritises recent listings. If you've had zero enquiries in 10 days, your price is too high. Drop 15% and repost.
