How to spot a Tradeza scam (and never fall for one)
The 8 patterns that show up in every classifieds scam — and the rules that keep you safe.

Scammers target classifieds platforms because cash changes hands between strangers. The good news: nearly every scam follows the same playbook. Once you know it, they become easy to spot.
Red flag 1: "I'll courier it to you, just pay via EFT"
This is the most common scam on every classifieds site globally. Never pay upfront and never ship before meeting. If you can't meet, don't buy.
Red flag 2: The price is too good
A "R1,500 iPhone 14" doesn't exist outside of a scam. When you see it, assume it's fake until the seller proves otherwise — by meeting you in a public place with the actual item.
Red flag 3: Sudden urgency
"I'm moving overseas tomorrow", "First to EFT gets it", "My cousin wants to pay already but I'll give you priority if you transfer now." Real sellers don't rush. Urgency is a pressure tactic.
Red flag 4: They can't meet in person
"I'm in KZN but can arrange delivery." If you're in Joburg, either they meet you, or you don't buy. No exceptions, even for cheap items.
Red flag 5: They want to use a "secure payment service" you've never heard of
Real safe payment methods: cash on collection, instant EFT you verify cleared before leaving, PayFast escrow (if offered). Never Bitcoin, gift cards, Western Union, "MoneyApp", or any link they send you.
Red flag 6: Fake payment confirmation emails
Sellers, watch for this: "Here's my proof of payment". The email might look like Standard Bank or FNB but check carefully — scammers Photoshop these. Only release goods once the money is in your account and cleared. Not "pending". Cleared.
Red flag 7: Asking for your ID + banking details "for the delivery company"
No delivery company needs your ID number, bank account, or a photo of your card. If they ask, block them and report the ad.
Red flag 8: The photos are stolen
Right-click their first listing photo → "Search image on Google". If it shows up on Takealot, another classifieds site, or a manufacturer's page, it's stolen. Ask for a fresh photo holding a piece of paper with today's date on it.
The 5 rules that keep you safe
- Meet in a public place — a mall or a shopping-centre parking lot during the day.
- Inspect the item fully before paying.
- Pay in cash, or via EFT that you've confirmed cleared in your account before leaving.
- Never share banking, ID, or card details.
- If something feels off, walk away. Another ad exists.
And always report suspicious ads using the red Report button on any listing. It helps protect everyone on Tradeza.
